I am constantly amazed at the amount of MIS-TAKEN, MIS-INFORMED, ILL-INFORMED 'info' / opinions people have about staying heathy, exercise & weight lose. I think most people know their car engine more than they know their own body!
I kept telling people that they should do some strength training to built muscles and they recoil in terror - what? be like those body builders,, esp the lady body builders? My dear, you'd have to be a serious bodybuilder to get to that stage!!
So people don't want MUSCLE. They also don't want FAT. So, what's left - SKIN & BONES??
I just ask them a simple question. What holds your body up & allows u to move, to carry things? YES, YOUR MUSCLES (and of course all the ligaments, tendons, cartilage, etc.).
My skinny frens tell me.- BUT I'M FAT! Say what? 5 foot tall & 50K ..and u say u are fat? Then they show me the 'PROVE' - a sagging tummy .. Then i say - STAND UP STRAIGHT & SHOULDERS BACK and their lovehandles are less obvious.
I also say that it's LOOSE SKIN, because u have no muscles to fill the space between bone & skin. Build some muscle and that will stretch out the skin and tighten it -- That's called TONE UP YOUR BODY. You will then have some SHAPE rather then be a straight 'bamboo stick'
Then they say.. hmm.. that's right, I see... BUT I STILL DONT WANT MUSCLES-LAH!
Aiyoh!! Here we go again ---
The MYTHS & MIS-INFORMED IDEAS r SOOOOO INGRAINED in everyone's mindset that their mind is so set! All those Incredible Hulk & Terminator shows really have a strong impact on a person's own set of believes!
I also believe a terrible LACK OF CORRECT INFO ABOUT OUR BODY since schooldays has lead to us forming our own 'opinion' on that subject. People read a bit here & there, heresay from a fren, then glanced at some medical breakthrough or listened to a vitamin salesman and they think they know how their body works.
After a long, lengthy explanation to another fren who is around 50 about benefits of doing some form of weight-bearing exercise to strengthen his core muscles and prevent back pains, he sounded convinced. He went home and consulted his wife. She said - no need-lah. Just eat less & move around a bit, can already! Then next day, he said, : "My wife says no need". I'm may not a qualified trainer, but i've been reading up & have personal experience undergoing strength training & felt the benefits for many years. But my opinion was superseded by someone who only went on occasional morning walks!!
So i hope people will keep and OPEN MIND & not be BLINDED by what they think they know and learn from those who are really in the know (watch these slides).
